Nexus: The Side Event #1

Hey everyone, and welcome to The Side Event!

I’m starting this new series of blog posts as a means to add content to the game that’s both fast to put together and easy to implement. The idea of this particular column is to create Events that you can insert into your Bouts to make them feel more spectacular and unique. Also, they will hopefully help build your own, personal narrative while playing Nexus for extended periods of time.

The Events will have four components: Trigger, Instructions, Effect, and Modifier (TIEM, in short). These will be as clearly defined as possible, but since this is an editable blog post, clarifications and FAQs can be added to each entry following player feedback.

These are all entirely optional, severely under-tested for balance, and will probably result in one or more frustrated players when you first implement them. So, naturally, I highly encourage you to use them!

Without further ado, here’s the first entry of its kind:

Impromptu Crowd Funder

Your painstakingly assembled little pile of binary shinies takes another hit. You’re already on a losing streak. Things never seem to go your way, do they? Suddenly, an opportunity seems to present itself: the barge’s viewscreens pause their ad vomit for just a split second, enough for the idea to linger on the myriad, strangely-shaped retinas in attendance. “Sourcestarter.com”, the sign reads, calling the masses to action… and some of the beings in attendance look like they might lend you a greasy, cred-laden appendage and lug you back into the fight! The Crowd taketh, but the Crowd also fundeth… provideth you demonstrate copious amounts of luck, guts, and also seem generally careless and willing to gamble even more cred than you just lost. So, are you up for it?

Trigger: The first time during this Bout that a Lanista loses 5 or more Bits to the Crowd Pile in one go, trigger this event.

Instructions: The Lanista who just lost the Bits may ante up any number of Bits they may currently have, up to half the total amount of Bits in the Crowd Pile. Match the ante with Bits from the Crowd Pile and set the two piles in clear view of all players. The Lanista then calls “heads” or “tails”. Start flipping pairs of coins, one from each pile – have another Lanista (or the Pit Boss) handle the flipping for the Crowd Pile; the called choice remains set for the entire duration of the flipping sequence.

Effect: If the called face is on any single one of the flipped coins, the Lanista adds them to their bit pile. If the results are identical, regardless of which face it is, add the coins to the Crowd Pile.

Modifier: Before the Lanista would lose a pair of coins, they may pay a TP counter from their aerie to the Crowd Pile in order to flip their coin once more before determining the final result. Only one TP counter may be paid this way per flipped pair.

And that’s it!

You’ll win some, you’ll lose some, but you gotta risk it to get the Bit-scuit.

I’ll see myself out.

Cheers!
Cozzy
